Breaking Barriers Behind the Bar at Queens: The Rise of Women in Mixology

Robyn Murray, a highly skilled cocktail bartender at Queens, is breaking barriers and inspiring more women to step behind the bar.

The mixology scene is a vibrant contributor to South Africa’s economy, fuelling growth in the hospitality, tourism, and beverage industries, and females like Robyn are playing a key role in shaping its future.

As the industry comes together to celebrate World Bartender Day on February 24th, it’s the perfect opportunity to highlight the impact of women in mixology and recognise the talent and dedication they bring to the craft.

  • The South African bar and mixology industry has traditionally been a male-dominated space, where women were often relegated to front-of-house roles rather than being recognised as skilled bartenders or mixologists. Despite this, the industry has seen a gradual shift towards inclusivity as more women step into leadership roles behind the bar, bringing fresh creativity, diverse perspectives, and refined techniques that elevate the craft.

The rise of inclusive venues such as Queens is proving that skill and passion—not gender—define success behind the bar. With growing recognition and support, there has never been a better time for women to embrace the art of mixology and make their mark in the industry.

“Female mixologists have the power to redefine cocktail culture by introducing unique flavours and championing sustainable practices. While the industry has traditionally been male-dominated, women should not be discouraged from pursuing careers in mixology,” says Murray, who discovered her passion for mixology in 2017 as a cocktail bartender and quickly rose through the ranks to become a manager.

Murray aspires to travel and work internationally and aims to make a significant impact while representing South Africa in the global mixology scene. She is currently pursuing her WSET Level 1 certification, which she earned as a scholarship through the industry-recognized group SIS. Prior to joining Queens in 2023, Robyn relocated to Cape Town, joining the renowned Harringtons Cocktail Lounge as a bartender and later as a bar manager, allowing her to refine her skills in creating innovative, high-quality cocktails while managing a dynamic team.

‘’The beauty of mixology lies in its endless possibilities. Don’t be afraid to experiment, to push boundaries, and to find your own style. Passion and persistence will always set you apart’’ – Murray adds.

With a passion for mixology and a commitment to fostering inclusivity, Robyn is not only crafting exceptional cocktails but also paving the way for a more diverse industry. Through her dedication, she hopes to prove that talent in mixology knows no gender.

As World Bartender Day shines a spotlight on bartenders worldwide, Robyn’s journey serves as an inspiration for aspiring female mixologists to pursue their passion and redefine the future of the industry.
