De Grendel’s Op Die Berg Chardonnay 2019 is one of only six chardonnays in the world, and the only one in South Africa to achieve Master status in the Global Chardonnay Masters awards.
The Drinks Business wine and spirits magazine’s judges were blindfolded during tastings and are known to have some of the finest palates in the world. The panel consists of Masters of Wine, Master Sommeliers and senior wine buyers. They asses overall quality and character across old and new wine regions and price brackets.
Co-chair of the judges, Patrick Schmitt MW, said:
Among the areas that stood out, it should be stressed that once more, South Africa proved itself a great place for first- rate Chardonnay at an accessible price. Particularly the wines from De Grendel, who have crafted a lovely and affordable Chardonnay.
The wine is grown on the Ceres Plateau in the Witenzberg mountains, 960m above sea level. Here the winter temperatures drop below freezing and add to the pure and intense flavour of the fruit. You can expect apple and citrus aromas from this wine, along with crème caramel, sweet orange marmalade and a rich, refined finish. It pairs well with creamy pastas, grapefruit salads and mild, aromatic curries.
Op Die Berg Chardonnay 2019 is available from the De Grendel cellar door or online shop for R200.
