Purity of fruit, elegance and structure.
Originating from the Swartland, The Chocolate Block is a South African cult wine with an international following. Fruit-driven, spice and aromatics are the hallmarks which illustrate this approachable, almost refreshing red blend.
The Chocolate Block was initially produced from grape pockets found across multiple regions between its inception in 2002 and the 2014 edition. The 2015 vintage (a heralded one at that), saw the wine become Swartland Wine of Origin.
Although the blend proportions vary slightly with each release, the dominance of Syrah remains unwavering.
Detailed composition of the wine.
- Syrah is the predominant variety on both farms and makes up 74% of the blend. The Grenache (10%) from bush vines on Porseleinberg is the quiet superstar of the blend, offering pure fruit brightness and texture. The extended hang times allowed for elegant Swartland Cabernet Sauvignon (7%).
In summary: The 2021 vintage, although somewhat riper, shows lower alcohol and good natural acidity, which should develop very well for years to come.
