Kloof Street hotspot Jackal and Hide joined the Urban Brandy Cocktail Route last year, creating the coolest coupling – trendy brandy-inspired cocktails in one of Cape Town’s hippest bar settings.
Sexy Science Elixirs at Jackal and Hide
Conceptualised by Jackal and Hide resident mixologist, Rory McKelvie, the ‘Sexy Science Elixirs’ are a clever take on the classic tale of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Louis Stevenson. The story goes that the wholesome Dr Jekyll unwittingly falls victim to his own experiments when trying to separate the good and bad inside him. However, unlike its namesake, Jackal and Hide promises that you won’t be faced with your evil twin when you partake in their four brandy-inspired ‘Sexy Science Elixirs’- each named after good and bad ‘emotions’: envy, passion, rage and trust; and imaginatively served in a laboratory flasks.
Everyone’s least favourite little green monster, ‘Envy’ is made with KWV 3YO brandy and a dash of triple sec, topped with cloudy apple juice, a touch of fresh lemon and green apple syrup – plus that ‘magic’ special ingredient, ginger beer, for an added ‘zing’.
‘Passion’, the emotion that gets your engines glowing, is created from Fish Eagle brandy, a dash of fresh passion fruit and lemon. Followed by Jackal and Hide’s homemade cane syrup and finished off with pineapple juice and lemonade, it’s absolutely delicious!
Next up, we hit the danger zone with red devil, ‘Rage’. This bodacious beast is made from Oude Molen 100 Reserve brandy, with mixed berries, cranberry juice and a touch of fresh lime, all topped off with berry syrup and Jackal and Hide’s homemade cinnamon cane sugar and a dash of soda.
For the virtue we all hold dear; ‘Trust’, we encounter a blue brew. KWV 5YO brandy, lemon curd and lemon and pineapple juice, tonic water and Blue Curacao, for that magical hue!
McKelvie adds “We’ve been a cocktail bar for a while now, so the marriage between Jackal and Hide and Urban Brandy Cocktail Route was just what we needed. We’re lucky that Urban Brandy has embraced our quirkiness and allowed us to experiment and get creative – that’s exactly what makes great cocktails!”
