Sustainable and environmentally-friendly business practice has always been in the spotlight for ROSTO in Linden.
Reflecting on a year of operations in Linden, ROSTO’s founding team has taken stock of how they managed to minimise their impact on the environment, as well as uplift communities through supporting hand-made products.
“We’re free-range to earth-friendly,” explains Founder of ROSTO, Lance Littlefield, who explored every possible option to recycle, upcycle and repurpose materials when fitting out the ROSTO interior.
All of the wood in our shop is reclaimed timber. Our tables, counters and shelves started out as roof trusses in Pietermaritzburg; and were given their second lease when we were on the lookout for reclaimed oregon pine to fit out our eatery. Wooden pallets were used to clad our ceiling too!
ROSTO also makes sure to support worthwhile community projects through its sourcing practices, opting for products from Ngwenya Glass for instance.
All of our glassware is made from recycled glass, and in choosing Ngwenya Glass products, we are in turn supporting their own initiatives in Swaziland.
Littlefield furthers that even the light fittings inside ROSTO have been crafted from Italian cold drink bottles, and that light bulbs are LED, meaning no single globe in the restaurant consumes more than 4 Watts of power.
For creating their signature rotisserie chickens, ROSTO ensures that it’s sources of energy offer a lower carbon footprint than electricity:
Our main fuel sources are gas and wood, and we burn bluegum in our rotisserie, an alien plant species that is not endemic to South Africa.
Rather than creating further plastic waste, ROSTO has also opted to filter and bottle water on site, while all plastic and glass is recycled responsibly.
