Nestled beneath Lion’s Head and surrounded by ocean views, the iconic President Hotel will be welcoming South African specialist photographer, Leah Hawker, to present her latest conceptual series of work, whilst hosting a refined high tea in celebration of all women this Women’s Day.
On Friday, 9 August from 11:00 to 13:30, guests are invited to experience and discuss the unveiling of Leah’s controversial photographs and recently launched book, Breastfeeding 101, bringing women’s issues, identity and modern day gender roles to light.
To complement the exhibition and inspirational talk, the hotel’s Executive Chef, Jacques Swart, will elegantly present an enticing high tea that will have diners coming back for more. The menu will consist of a sumptuous spread of cakes and savoury pastries, perfectly stacked in three tier celebrations, such as classic cream cheese finger sandwiches, scones with house stewed strawberry jam and a Chantilly cream, delicate macarons, lamingtons and moist opera cake that can be enjoyed along with a selection of tasteful teas, all for R185pp.
Leah’s recently launched book, Breastfeeding 101, brings together 101 women to tell their stories about the realities of breastfeeding, a subject which is so often hidden from the public eye. The book explores personal truths, myths and attitudes towards the practice, inevitably raising topical questions about how women feel about themselves, how they are seen by others and how they are marketed to. The photography depicts portraits of each and every woman that Leah had approached where each woman can be seen standing tall, feeding her child in public, accompanying each of their candid accounts. Leah will be opening the floor to discussion and hopes to contribute to the elimination of the stigma around one of the most mammal and maternal actions.
