I’ve always loved La Mouette. I thought it had something to do with the fact that I think the owners are some of the nicest people in the universe. But every time I eat there, I remember it’s actually because the food is absolutely-damn-wonderful. Oh, and that the owners are great too. Obvs.
I soaked up what may be the last of summer one Sunday afternoon, for a stunning lunch… But please note, eating this in front of their fireplace would have been pretty damn magical too, so don’t let the cold scare you away.

STARTERS
Bolognaise // 85
This gorgeous,carb-free gemsbok bolognaise was a perfect winter starter, both in content and size. The rich and decadent bolognaise, was balanced with sharp turnip “noodles” (toodles?), salt-dried gemsbok and then topped with mature cheese.
Prawns // 105
The salt and pepper prawns actually tasted like prawn and not just seasoning – it saddens me that so many restaurants get this wrong. They had a nice kick to them, that was enhanced with a spicy chipotle mayo. Celeriac, micro herbs, pickled cucumbers and chimichurri (an Argentinian sauce, traditionally made with parsley, salt, garlic, vinegar and chilli) added fresh, sour and tart dimension to the dish, while onion ash gave it a subtle smokey undertone.
MAINS
Beef Sirloin // 195
Don’t mess with me and my steak. Especially at 195, I want it to be perfection – and it was. Served with herbed potatoes, mushroom soil and ponzu gel (a Japanese citrusy sauce). The biggest surprise of all, because I don’t normally like them, was how incredibly delicious the raw sprouts were. They were fresh and added both a wonderfully different texture to the dish and a unique nuttiness that complemented the mushrooms. **drools**
Duck // 185
I didn’t think anything would match my sirloin, but hotdamn I was wrong. This incredible portion of duck blew my socks off. I even had a little bit of food jealousy, thank goodness I force people to share their food with me. It was duck, like 10973 ways. Roast duck breast, duck liver parfait and crispy confit duck with smoked sweet beets, wild mushrooms, figs and pine nuts. Go and eat this immediately.
The ever-evolving menu makes use of the freshest, in-season ingredients, which means it’s always current. Although they don’t specifically focus what’s considered “healthy food”, you can see how it’s considered in the menu origination – the dishes are filling, without being heavy and carb-laden. La Mouette continue to thrill and astound me every single time I visit.
