I’ve always been a big fan of Sevruga so when they came calling for us to review their new winter tasting menu, I couldn’t refuse. I’ve only ever been to the restaurant during the summer either for lunch (review) or to take advantage of their incredible sushi specials. But there is always a first time and I was happy to join Sevruga on a cold and chilly evening for dinner with a group of friends.
Winter Tasting Menu
Their winter tasting menu was launched a few months ago offering fantastic value with two courses available for only R165. If you are extremely hungry, three courses can be ordered for only R210. Even though it’s called a tasting menu, the portions are anything but small. It’s fantastic value for money!
…to start.
Sevruga knows sushi; and sushi knows Sevruga.
With so many options, there was no way we would order sushi as our mains. But for a starter; some of us did. The Red Roof Rolls included avocado, pickled veggies, mayo all wrapped in seared tuna and was an absolute delight. We also ordered seared tuna sashimi and salmon roses. The fish used was very fresh, while you could notice that a lot of care was taken in the preparation of the sushi. The salmon roses in particular were a definitely highlight.
Apart from the sushi, some of us ordered the calamari starter. The spice-fried baby calamari is served with crispy pickled vegetables and a spicy and absolutely mind-blowing peanut dressing. The peanuts add a depth to the crunchy and light calamari – something you don’t expect.
The calamari were my highlight of Taste of Cape Town a few months ago and will be my go-to starter when dining at Beluga & Sevruga from now on.
Main courses
The line fish was served with lemon beurre blanc, pickled vegetables on a bed of crushed potatoes. The fish was cooked excellently but the hero of this dish was the rich and tangy lemon beurre blanc sauce, which I enjoyed a lot.
I probably won’t order the line fish again, as there are so many other exciting options on the menu. How about beef ribs or springbok?
Deboned beef ribs with coriander seed spices and a XO sauce are the order of the day at Sevruga. Chips and onions rings came as sides. I loved the Asian influence in what are normally traditional western BBQ ribs. They were deboned, so there is no messy business when eating them. This is Sevruga after all.
Saving the best for last: The marinated springbok served with a cherry chutney was a delight. I believe, this is one of their most popular dishes and it’s easy to understand the reason – it’s simply a dream to eat. The sweet cherry chutney complimented the spices of the marinated springbok perfectly making it well-rounded dish for a cold winter’s day.
We enjoyed a glass of Mystic Merlot with our mains. The subtle hint of berries allowed it to pair excellently with the marinated springbok enhancing the effects of the cherry chutney. Beautiful.
finish with something sweet.
I always hesitate when ordering crème brulee. There have been too many bad experiences and it ends the entire dinner on a sour note. This was not the case at Sevruga as they prepared the dish perfectly with a rich and smooth custard base, and a crispy top.
Simply delicious!
You have to try the chocolate and honeycomb sundae. Layers and layers of ice-cream, nuts and biscuit make it one of my favourite desserts on the menu. Beware: it’s not a tiny portion. After having a starter and a main course, I barely managed to finish mine.
It’s the ultimate dessert!
Overall, we enjoyed a very nice evening at Sevruga, enjoying beautiful food and excellent service. All of these dishes are also included on their standard a la carte offering, but there is no reason to order those when the winter tasting menu is so much cheaper. The winter tasting menu also offers a wide variety of dishes ranging from sushi and seafood to game, beef and poultry; you are sure to find something that you like.
