Spier Wines has their fingers in many a wine bottle.
From their Signature range to their Creative Block blends and 21 Gables, they are always evolving and always improving. They’ve put hard work into the last two years to develop another unique duo of wines that celebrate the coast. Thus they have called it Seaward.
Consisting of a chardonnay and a shiraz, these wines are light and woody and layered and spicy in their own rights. Of course, all angles are considered before admitting anything into the sophisticated Spier cellar and if these are there, you have to know meticulous attention to every detail has been made!
Created to celebrate South Africa’s coastal terroir, two wines were created to represent our regions where two ocean currents meet. Coastal vineyards produce grapes of distinct character due to the saltiness of the ocean breeze and natural mountainous climate. The vines thrive in these conditions and the grapes produce a crop of outstanding quality – disease-free. Spier aimed to capture this in their chardonnay and shiraz and they’ve succeeded.
Expect ruby grapefruit, mango, citrus and raw almond undertones in the chardonnay and enjoy with pork, chicken, seafood and pasta. The shiraz will delight you with mulberries, violets and plums and is beautiful with grilled red meat and root vegetables.
Says Spier winemaker Frans Smit: “These vines grow in some of the oldest soils in the world, comprising decomposed granite and weathered shale. The water retention is excellent due to their high clay content, which enables us to farm these dryland without irrigation, giving them an intensity of flavour.”
“There is a purity of fruit in these wines, with great concentration, balance and finesse,” Smit says. “The common thread is a saline minerality, given the proximity to the ocean. We’re really excited about sharing the fruits of our labour with wine lovers.”
The Seaward range will be exclusively available from the Spier wine shop from May onwards, and in stores from July 2019.
