Durbanville Hills has released just over 1600 bottles of its limited edition 2015 The Scout Pinot Grigio. The wine forms part of the cellar’s latest range The Scout range, available exclusively to Wine Club members and at its tasting room.
The range is the winemakers’ playground where they experiment with interesting varietals and blends in their quest to offer something exciting to consumers each year.
White winemaker Kobus Gerber says that this Pinot grigio, a first for Durbanville Hills, is a fine example of the innovation at the cellar.
Not many producers in South Africa venture in making Pinot grigio and with our location that ideally suit this varietal we thought it would make a wonderful alternative for white wine enthusiasts. The vineyards are situated on a westerly slope that faces Table Bay where the grapes are sheltered from the morning sun and cooled throughout the day by sea breezes. We limited crushing and skin contact of the grapes, to preserve the colour and delicate fruity aromas.
Just over 60% of the wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks with the remainder matured in third and fourth fill French Oak barrels before blended. With a racy acidity the wine opens up to a delightful combination of almonds, aniseed, pear and white peaches with a touch of vanilla.
The wine is as food friendly as it is enjoyable on its own. Serve with Thai curries, spicy seafood and chicken dishes and smoked Salmon.
