McDonad’s have always been about innovative new products to stay on top of the game in a very competitive US & European market. Some of those have been a great success while others failed miserably. I’ve had a look at the top 5 worst McDonald’s products that no one knows about anymore. If you have any other products to add, please comment below.
McLobster
This isn’t hard to believe! Who would want to spend nearly R60 on a burger that you know won’t fill you up. And let’s be honest – it doesn’t look very appealing either. This burger is actually still available in Canada. But come on: If you want lobster, – you aren’t going to go to McDonald’s.
McPizza
In the 1990s, McDonald’s decided to compete in the pizza business with the most boring pizzas ever. As a result, people who wanted a pizza went to a pizza place like they have always had. This left franchises suffering as they had just invested in new expensive ovens and wideneded drive-through windows that weren’t really needed. Gradually, McPizza was dicontinued and mostly forgotten.
McPasta
McDonald’s tested pasta-based products at 40 units in America during the early 90s such as lasagne, fettuccine alfredo and spaghetti. Similar to the McPizza, people weren’t really interested. More recently the company tried pasta meals for kids in New Zealand and Australia. You guessed it! It failed as well!
Hulaburger
This was arguably the biggest fail McDonalds ever had. The burger was created in 1963 and was aimed at Roman Catholics who weren’t allowed to eat meat on Fridays. In summary, it was a cheeseburger with a slice of pineapple instead of meat. It was a complete disaster unlike the Filet-O-Fish which was introduced at the same time and is still going strong.
McAfrica
The problem with this burger wasn’t the product itself but rather the timing of its release. At the time, the widespread famine in Africa is all over the news. The backlash was severe so McDonald’s put donation boxes for famine relief in all stores selling the product.
