On Wednesday 18 November 2015, nature lovers are invited to join The Cape Leopard Trust and Neethlingshof Wine Estate at The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa for an exclusive three-course dinner and presentation, to find out more about the ground-breaking research underway in one of its associated projects – Urban Caracal. Priced at R515 per person, R50 per person will be donated to the wildlife project.
Guests will first gather in the Milkwood conference room for canapés and an informative talk by wildlife biologist, Dr. Laurel Serieys who will highlight the importance of protecting this endangered species. Following the presentation, Executive Chef Christo Pretorius and Neethlingshof winemaker De Wet Viljoen will serve a delectable three-course food & wine pairing dinner in the award-winning Azure Restaurant – which includes a taste of the Neethlingshof’s aptly named ‘Caracal Red Blend’. The origin of the name is explained thus: ‘Almost never seen – the Caracal’s enigmatic presence is always felt. There are signs of this beautiful cat known as the rooikat (red cat) returning to the Neethlingshof estate now that islands of Renosterveld have been re-established amongst the vines.’
The Cape Leopard Trust is an active conservation working group, facilitating predator research and seeking solutions to human-wildlife conflict by inspiring interest in the environment through an interactive and dynamic environmental education programme. Since its inception, it has become an authority on predator conservation in the Cape, and one of the leading authorities in SA. The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa’s sister property Bushmans Kloof is a long-standing supporter of the Cape Leopard Trust initiative.
The Urban Caracal Project was established in Cape Town in September 2014 by The Cape Leopard Trust, UCT and Dr Laurel Serieys – following her successful bobcat and mountain lion conservation project in the USA. The project seeks to research the population size and health of the caracal population in the Cape Peninsula, as well as assess threats to their survival on the urban fringe.
