Rum is back in a big way, and the South African rum revolution started on a farm along the R70 between Riebeeckstad and Henneman in the Free Sate – the home of Whistler Rum, now the biggest rum distillery in the country.
Whistler, a small-batch rum, is as original as its drinkers – the “Whistlers,” people who do things differently. They tackle the “why’s?” of life with “why not’s, zig when everyone zags, and “Whistle their own tune”. Leading the resurrection of rum, brothers Trevor and Leon Bruns and Stephan De Vos started planning the production of a rum in 2015.
By the end of 2015, they had purchased a small 50l still with the objective of testing rum recipes. The distillery designs were finalised and construction started. By January 2017 the distillery was completed, and the first barrels were filled. In October 2017, Whistler African style rum was bottled in one-of-a-kind, especially made bottles, inspired by the steam whistle.
