With a remarkable legacy and importance in the history of Champagne, La Maison Pommery is a proudly traditional Champagne house from Reims, France whose global reach now extends to South Africa.
Its arrival in this country in early 2025 is cause for celebration!
Pommery is one of the most historic and celebrated producers in its category, known for perfecting the art and science of Champagne. Not to force nature, but to ensure that it yields its best: this is the philosophy behind Pommery’s Champagne-making legacy.
- In 1860, the recently widowed Madame Pommery took the reins of her late husband’s wine business with the ambition to grow her house. In July 1868 she launched what became known as ‘the construction site of the century’, where she led the transformation of crayères chalk pits into cellars. The soft white rock was mined for the construction in Reims, where the house is still located. To this day, the cellars continue to guarantee the perfect humidity and temperature conditions to age and store Champagne.
In 1874, Madame Pommery broke with tradition by introducing a Brut Champagne, different from the highly sugared wines favoured for most of the 19th century. She was the first to commercialise Brut Champagne and her wine, Pommery Nature, was a hit. Madame Pommery thus forever left her mark on the world of wine and infused her personality into a premium product that stands strong today. To make its signature Brut Royal, which is sold in 750ml and 1,5L bottles, Pommery uses a precise combination of 35% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir and 30% Pinot Meunier.
Nowadays, Pommery’s full range includes both Prestige Cuvees and more contemporary expressions of Champagne. The South African market will be able to appreciate the Brut Royal and Brut Royal Rosé, Apanage Blanc de Blancs and Royal Blue Sky NV.
These wines are produced with the utmost care and you can taste the sophistication in every sip. Meticulous selection of grapes and the premium quality of each annual harvest are at the centre of Pommery’s approach to winemaking. To preserve the consistent quality of the fruit, all grapes are picked on the same day. No machinery is used in the harvesting process to ensure the grapes remain in perfect condition on the trip from the vineyard to the press.
Today Madame Pommery’s famous house is owned by the Vranken Pommery Monopole Group which not only continues the legendary widow’s traditions but occupies second place in global Champagne sales. It has been awarded the Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne and High Environmental Value labels since 2014; the processes remain faithful to Madame Pommery’s vision to honour the environment in which the wines are developed and aged.
With its rich heritage and impeccable flavours, Pommery is quick to steal the hearts of all who raise a glass to their lips. The Champagne will be available at major retailers nationwide at the start of February 2025.
