Change is afoot at Kunjani in Stellenbosch, with the popular restaurant to close at the end of April 2025 to make way for an expanded luxury winelands accommodation offering.
Sustained demand for Kunjani’s private self-catering villas on the boutique wine estate in the Bottelary Hills led to a strategic decision to focus on accommodation as their primary business, Kunjani co-owner Pia Watermeyer said.
“In the meantime, Kunjani Restaurant is open for business daily up to 30 April, and we look forward to welcoming our friends and fans for a last long leisurely breakfast or lunch, or several, to celebrate good friends, food and wines in style,” she said.
- The existing building that houses the restaurant, shop and wine tasting venue will be converted to an additional three villas, set to open in November 2025. A bed-and-breakfast option will be added to the existing self-catering set-up.
“It has been seven and a half years of the restaurant at Kunjani, and we have loved hosting guests to enjoy a different winelands experience of contemporary African art and design, and a menu fusing African inspiration with European influences, but the time has come for change,” she said.
Kunjani’s four villas and garden cottage, offering 4* fully equipped, self-catering accommodation with privacy and vineyard views, have proved an ideal location, within 40 minutes of Cape Town International Airport, for exploring the Stellenbosch and Franschhoek winelands as well as for business travelers and golfers.
Watermeyer said positive economic signals of growth in winelands leisure and business tourism, and the expansion of the business footprint of Cape Town’s northern suburbs towards Stellenbosch, created demand for accommodation and the shift for Kunjani made business sense.
“What will not change is our warm hospitality and focus on supreme comfort, privacy, sophisticated design and attention to detail in anticipating guests’ needs,” she said. The existing private villas will remain open while the restaurant building is converted into new accommodation. The remodeling is mostly internal work, and the existing accommodation and parking is distant enough that we don’t foresee disruptions for guests, Watermeyer added.
