As Queens gears up for an exciting year ahead, bar manager Matthew Cox, alongside talented bartenders Tristan Jacobs and Robyn Murray, are eager to continue pushing the boundaries of Cape Town’s vibrant drinking culture.
As Queens Bar continues to lead the charge in Cape Town’s evolving cocktail scene, Matthew, Tristan, and Robyn are committed to pushing boundaries, embracing new trends, and staying true to their passion for craft bartending.
Matthew Cox is no stranger to the world of cocktails. Coming from a family deeply rooted in the liquor industry, his journey into bartending was almost destined.
- For Cox, the dynamic nature of bartending keeps him engaged – “No two days are ever the same,” he says. “I love the creative freedom and the chance to connect with people from all walks of life. It’s all about building relationships.” Looking ahead, Cox predicts that sustainability will remain at the forefront of cocktail culture in 2025, with an increased focus on eco-friendly practices and local ingredients. He also sees the rise of agave-based spirits continuing to gain popularity.
Tristan Jacobs’ journey into bartending started as a way to earn extra cash during university but soon grew into a true passion.
- Jacobs has honed his craft, especially when it comes to classic cocktails like the whiskey sour. For aspiring bartenders, Jacobs offers simple yet sage advice: “Never settle. Always seek to learn more and take on new responsibilities. Our industry is tight-knit, and the more we support one another, the more rewarding it becomes.”
Originally from the Eastern Cape, Robyn Murray has become a standout figure in Cape Town’s bartending scene.
- With eight years of experience, Murray infuses her cocktails with the distinct flavours of South Africa, drawing inspiration from her roots. “Buchu, Rooibos, and fynbos honey are some of my favourite ingredients to work with. They add rich, earthy tones and a uniquely South African sweetness to the drinks,” she says. As for 2025 trends, Murray notes a significant rise in alcohol-free options.
