Mondiall Head Chef Stephen Mandes has created a Winter Menu both for Lunch and Dinner, with a Winter Special Menu for each too, featuring hearty risottos, grilled red meats and juicy burgers – the latter of which have been elevated to a cult-like status.
These Winter Menus focus on sustainably sourced ingredients from ethical suppliers, and while keeping some of Mondiall’s favourites on the menu, Stephen has included some “feel good” dishes, which one may crave during the cooler months.
I’ve added herbed bone marrow to our steak dish – which is delicious, I’m also experimenting with the miso trend and have adapted our salmon dish, which is now glazed and served with Asian vegetables. And then I’m also doing kebabs tandoori-style. No frills no fuss!
Restaurateur Patrick Symington says that Mondiall remains a sophisticated, but casual brasserie-style dining experience, offering refined comfort food. The decor however continues to evolve, now bearing warm wood cladding offsetting the large mirrors and clear glass. Chic marble plinths and retro leather couches make up the informal seating area whilst bistro-style tables and banquettes are able to accommodate groups of all sizes.
And when night falls, Mondiall is able to reinvent itself with soft candlelight that illuminates the pictures on the walls of pressed plants in autumn colours, also casting light on the enormous iron chandelier and its crystals, which presides over the entire restaurant. The combination of industrial finishes, high ceilings and textural elements amalgamate into a flowing space that feels spacious yet intimate. And since Mondiall has installed a gas fireplace, it is an ideal spot to escape the cold and the crowds.
The Winter Lunch and Dinner Special Menus – costing R185 for two courses and R225 for three courses – draw from the main Lunch and Dinner menus.
Lunch options include Starter choices of mussels, a bowl of squid, and aubergine and tomato; Mains choices of Wagyu burger, BBQ Banger & Mash and Risotto of the day; and Desserts of steamed pudding and Tonka Bean cheesecake. The Dinner Menu options offered are Tandoori chicken kebabs, smoked pork belly, and gnocchi and mushrooms; Mains of Bangers & Mash, BBQ Baby Chicken, and Risotto of the day; and Desserts of Chocolate Noir Tart, Tonka Bean Cheesecake, and Petit Fours. All of Mondiall’s Winter Menus will run for the duration of the season.
