Mykonos Taverna Greek Buffet

Greece does have a few peculiar dishes. I can still remember a show on the Travel Channel where the presenter ate things like tripe soup, cow-lung soup and sea squirt. The things people do for money! I will rather stick to the more traditional Greek cuisine.

Mykonos Taverna is situated on 343 Main Road in Sea Point and serves authentic Greek cuisine with signature dishes such as Peter’s Kleftiko Lamb and I must not forget to mention their famous calamari. A few weeks ago I was invited to the launch of their Sunday buffet which is available every Sunday from 12h00 – 16h00 and will only cost you R79 per person.

Greek food, culture, atmosphere, tastes and breaking plates! OPA!

You can’t complain about getting value – the buffet selection was terrific! A traditional Greek salad as well as others including potatoes, spinach, feta, cucumbers and tzatziki were among the usual suspects on the buffet table as starters. For the main course, you could dig into calamari, beef and chicken souvlaki while rice and potato wedges were available as side-dishes. If you have a very sweet tooth, a range of traditional Greek desserts were offered as well.

I spoke to Dimitri, the owner of Mykonos Taverna. He mentioned that the core of the buffet selection will mostly stay the same every week while he will look to introduce new dishes if he notices that others have become unpopular.

I don’t really like the idea of buffets at restaurants. Most people go there with the intention of getting their money’s worth and stuff 10x the amount of food down their throat than they normally would. But the buffet is different at Mykonos Taverna: You go there to enjoy the food and eat in a relaxed setting in true Greek style. I think that has a lot to do with the way Dimitri runs his restaurant. He and the restaurant staff are always talking to the guests and making sure that everyone feels at home. And they got it right: I did feel at home and I could have stayed for hours. Eating and Enjoying!

For more information you can head over to their website. Mykonos Taverna can be found on Twitter as well.
