To be completely honest, it’s not often that I eat a pie unless it is 3am or I’m incredibly hungover. Especially not a R90 one. But off to Reuben’s I went, to try out their fusion dish for the Waterfront’s “Master of the Trade Route Challenge”.
Their task was to create a fusion dish, which combined South African and one other cuisine. And what was their fusion masterpiece? Steak and Guinness pie, served with mash and peas and a glass of wine.
Fusion? Really?
The pie was divine. Large chunks of tender steak, mushrooms, onions and oodles of peppery gravy and a beautifully golden, light pastry. It was served in a potjie pot (the South African “influence”) separate to the creamy mash and slightly overcooked peas.
It was definitely worth the R90 pricetag and I would definitely recommend giving it a try (you have until the end of August). However, as a fusion competitor in the challenge – I was very disappointed. Their excuse was that they wanted to do a different kind of fusion, well, their “different” was just not doing fusion at all.
