Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town, South Africa has teamed up with acclaimed author Alexander McCall Smith and award-winning director Nicholas Ellenbogen to stage No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, The Musical. Premiering on 6th October 2015 in the landmark hotel’s Grill Room, the master storyteller’s family musical is a unique chance for fans to see one of the world’s best-loved novelist’s work performed in an intimate setting.
McCall Smith regularly visits Cape Town which is home to Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel, nestled at the foot of Table Mountain in the heart of the dynamic city. Penned by Ellenbogen especially for this exclusive collaboration, No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, The Musical is based on the first five books in McCall Smith’s best-selling series and follows the adventures of Mma Ramotswe and her sidekicks, secretary Mma Makutsi and motor mechanic J.L.B Matekoni.
Exploring the issues of morality, humour and love, McCall Smith’s much-loved stories are brought to theatrical life by Ellenbogen against the rugged backdrop of the Botswana bush with its local villages, traditional people and awe-inspiring wildlife. The musical features a seven-person cast accompanied by a three-piece live band, performing a music score composed by Scotsman Tom Cunningham and Cape Town native Josh Hawks. Twelve specially created songs incorporate African dance, reggae, pioneer-style jazz and gentle ballads.
No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, The Musical runs from Tuesday – Sunday at Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel until mid-December 2015, following which it will travel to Johannesburg before touring further afield.
